So many do NOT have sustainable access to clean water sources. In Africa 25% of the children do not live to be 5 years old due to illnesses caused by contaminated drinking water. For many, water is a precious commodity, requiring grinding daily labor to acquire. Mostly women and children make trips on foot to water streams as far away as three miles and carry the water (commonly 40 pounds in weight) back on their heads. The amount of human energy and time that takes leaves no resources for education, harvesting, or economic activities. They fetch water from the same rivers and seasonal streams that are used for travel, animals, bathing, and disposing of human wastes. The contaminated water is consumed causing water-borne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and dysentery; all of which can lead to death.
